I was given opportunities by a series of people in my life. I am where I am today because others saw things in me I had not yet been able to see. My mission is to be the person who gives opportunities to those not accustomed to getting opportunities. A felony is not a life sentence, but it takes a change in mindset to overcome. I believe that if you give opportunities, you usually receive gratitude and good work. My goal in life is to change how “temp workers” are seen and treated, making all workers equal. — Marcel Hofker Strive Staffing believes in "Inclusive Opportunity" because the only way to improve society is to bring opportunity to everyone. Right now there are nearly 70 million Americans that have criminal records, this is 1 in 3 people in our communities that have barriers to gainful employment. The status quo of background qualifications is alienating a large diverse group of people who want to make better for themselves. This is our mission and its intertwined in our day to day business practice. We believe that those companies that rethink their background qualifications, becoming more inclusive, will see an increase of worker retention. People tend to be loyal to those that have invested in them.

    I didn't realize that I have been a business owner for 7 years until I logged in today. To be honest, this is the longest time I've ever held a job, by a factor of 3. This is all possible because I chose to give myself a chance, so I started working on myself with a fellowship of other working on themselves and got at it. Through connection with others I have found myself in recovery from a crippling addiction that kept me in a constant struggle or over 20 years. Today I get to share my experience of successful re-entry post incarceration and post addiction in prisons and with others who do not have this perspective. I get to share with others like me the perspective shifts I had to undergo to make these changes and get passed the crippling fear of failing, again. 7 years, self employed entrepreneur. Best job tittle I've ever had. We do recover, we can thrive. #wedorecover

    As you may know Strive Staffing is the only union signatory staffing company in Minnesota. With that, we stand with our workers and their rights to collective bargaining. Strive is a business OF people, not much more than that. We are a worker facing company that finds it more beneficial to the end customer if the workers feel supported and secure in their work. There is a large portion of society that work "temporary" or seasonal jobs, they don't have medical coverage because they make to much if they work yet not enough to afford to live and health insurance. We often have people work a month and then come in hat in hand saying they have to quit because they are gonna lose their health coverage. One month of working two homestands at the baseball stadium, Maybe 15 shifts. Why do we feel the need to cut off someone right at the start of their effort. Some say "F' It, why bother?" Why can't we support the upward mobility of our people? What is it to extend the support another tax bracket up FROM THE BOTTOM? We need people to get their heads above water first before we can expect them to swim. What does it take to get legislation to support "Upward Mobility"? Each person that has come in and quit for this reason comes in with a look of defeat. They found a job that would take them and except them for where they were and got excited about working again just to be put in a place where they had to weigh the cost/benefit and the work always loses to jobless but covered. WE CAN DO BETTER.

    Here's an article showing the importance of 2nd chance employment in Minnesota. There is a 168,000 worker gap in Minnesota. Keeping those with DOCUMENTED bad decisions must be allowed back into society, they must be RE-ENFRANCHISED into our communities, we NEED THEM. I for one believe "INCLUSIVE OPPORTUNITY" should be at the top of the list. Let's take control of the narrative and allow those that have paid their "debt" their right to the PURSUIT of HAPPINESS. For the employers: We should make the decision to hire someone with a hard to hire history easier. If we established "Felon Discrimination" legislation, capping background checks at 3 and 5 years (Non-v, V) which will limit their "Due Diligence" responsibility and allow them to hire without the need to know anything that happened prior. The PERCIEVED LIABILITY of hiring this population is what really holds a lot of companies back, the fear of a negligent hiring lawsuit, that could sink their business. If we cap what is visible under the grounds of "Personal Privacy", we could lighten the burden of this liability allowing them to open their doors for more people.
