(SAINT PAUL, MN, May 9 2017) – The Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce Charitable Foundation announced today its selection of Christopher Coleman, Mayor of The City of Saint Paul, and Neighborhood House as recipients of the 2017 H.E.R.B.I.E awards. Recipients will be honored at Eighteenth Annual Foundation Luncheon on June 29, 2017. The H.E.R.B.I.E. award recognizes individuals and organizations that exemplify the traits inspired by its namesake, Herb Brooks: Humanitarian, Enterprising, Resilient, Bold, Inspiration and Ethical. Each year, two recipients (one individual and one organization) are selected by the Chamber's Foundation Board. “The Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce Charitable Foundation board is excited to announce Mayor Chris Coleman as the 2017 H.E.R.B.I.E. individual award winner and Neighborhood House as the organizational H.E.R.B.I.E. award winner,” said Jennifer Hellman, Chair of the Foundation Board, “Despite having our most competitive field of nominations since the inception of the award in 2004, Mayor Coleman’s dedication and passion for Saint Paul combined with his civil service stood out as embodying the spirit of the H.E.R.B.I.E. award.” Foundation board member, John Marshall of Xcel Energy notes, “Neighborhood House, is celebrating 120 years of helping Saint Paul’s newest, poorest residents break out of poverty and become engaged, contributing members of our community. The organization’s work has brought a vibrant diversity to Saint Paul and the East Metro and it has provided the education and skills training for those in need on their journey to thriving and stable lives. The Chamber Foundation is honored to add Neighborhood House’s name to the esteemed list of H.E.R.B.I.E. award winners.” Mayor Coleman is finishing up his third term as Mayor of the City of Saint Paul after several years as a city councilmember, community, and neighborhood leader. He focused on initiatives to make Saint Paul the most livable city in America, including working to close the achievement gap, creating sustainable and responsible budgets, and investing in the infrastructure of Saint Paul. He championed several projects during his time in office from CHS Field, to the Green Line (Central Corridor Light Rail Line), the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken in the state of Minnesota, and finally, The Palace Theater. Mayor Coleman’s efforts and initiatives were accomplished with sound fiscal management that produced structurally-balanced budgets which use ongoing revenues for ongoing expenses; putting the city on solid fiscal ground positioned Saint Paul nationally as an attractive city for investment from new businesses and employers. As a core of his agenda Mayor Coleman has advocated for bridging the education gap for children, promoting the understanding that the future and current success of Saint Paul depends on our ability to equip our students with the tools for success from cradle to career. Mayor Coleman’s has also prioritized the safety of residents in and visitors to Saint Paul. Committed to building world-class departments that set the standard for service to residents and community. Neighborhood House has been a welcoming presence for thousands of refugees and immigrants since its founding in 1897 by the women of Mount Zion Temple, who worked to help Eastern European Jewish families settle in the Saint Paul area. Neighborhood House has supported families in times of transition or need from more than 50 cultural and ethnic populations, drawing people from diverse communities in Saint Paul and beyond. The demographic makeup of Neighborhood House’s service population has changed with each successive wave of newcomers—Mexican immigrants after World War II, Hmong refugees in the 1970s and 80s, and Somali and Karen most recently. What has not changed is their unbending commitment to help families move from “survive” to “thrive. Today, Neighborhood House serves more than 15,000 people at the six locations throughout the City of St. Paul. Whether starting a business, becoming an elected official, attending school, or providing the service that employers need, at Neighborhood House thousands of people have developed the skills they need to contribute to the vibrancy of the community. President, Nancy Brady, President, will be accepting the H.E.R.B.I.E. award on behalf of Neighborhood House.
