(SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA, October 18, 2016) - The Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce today announced the winners of the Leaders in Local Government Awards. The awards honor organizations that exemplify and demonstrate innovation, excellence, and success in local government. Additionally, Councilmember Ady Wickstrom, City of Shoreview, has been named the Elected Official of Note. The award winners were announced at the Political Leadership Luncheon on October 18, 2016, at the University of St. Thomas. See photos here. The 2016 Leaders in Local Government Award winners are: Planning and Land Zoning Saint Paul PED - Planning Division The Saint Paul Planning Division has served the community through an unparalleled period of growth and development in Saint Paul. Led by Planning Director Donna Drummond, the team has: Planned for development around the Green Line, proposing new land use controls consistent with sustainable mixed-use development and ensuring that the project would meet the complex needs of the surrounding community; set the template for the eventual redevelopment of the Ford Site as one of the country’s most environmentally sustainable urban communities; and shaped plans for the new MLS Soccer Stadium to create a sense of place and urban vitality in the Midway. In all they do, the Division staff actively engages the wider community and demonstrates patience, professionalism and commitment to the best interests of all involved. Public Works City of Maplewood The city’s public works team has, over the past few years, introduced a Living Streets initiative that integrates pedestrian and bike friendly planning when streets are reconstructed, an aggressive approach to managing storm water runoff and drainage to improve local watersheds, and a comprehensive asset management plan for all public infrastructure in Maplewood. Communications City of Roseville The city maintains not only an easy to use citizen “connection” web page for citizens who want to subscribe to particular types of information (from snow plowing to city council minutes) but also produces timely, entertaining, and informative communication newsletters that apply to both residents and local businesses alike. Financial Performance City of Saint Paul: Penfield building sale In 2011 the City of Saint Paul boldly moved the development of a market rate housing project forward. Earlier this year the city signed off on the sale of the complex for $65.5 million, yielding an $8.7 million profit! That profit will be reinvested in future HRA projects. Business Retention and Expansion Category Ramsey County The demolition of the former Ramsey County West Building and Jail is freeing up what can only be called “once in a life-time” space on the river. The land has been off the tax rolls since 1992 and the County anticipates that demolition will be completed in 2017. Elected Official of Note Councilmember Ady Wickstrom - City of Shoreview For the past 20 years, Ady Wickstrom, who recently announced her retirement from public office, has been a familiar face on the Shoreview City Council. During her tenure she has shown an unwavering commitment to service in her community and the broader region, actively participating in countless boards and committees. Notably, Councilmember Wickstrom played a critical role in partnership with the Chamber to engage communities throughout Ramsey County in advancing regional transit and transportation investments in the East Metro.
